          Sexual Assault of Woman in the Lake Merritt Area

The Oakland Police Department took a report of a sexual assault of a woman in the Lake Merritt Area
on February 8th, 2011. The female victim reported being sexually assaulted and beaten in her apartment
complex in the 800 block of Jackson Street as she returned home on February 7th at approximately 10:00
P.M. The suspect is described as an African-American male approximately 6’0 tall with a medium
complexion and casually dressed in a dark long sleeved shirt and a dark cap. This incident is a high
priority to the Oakland Police Department and investigators from Special Victims Unit have been
assigned to the case. Anyone with information is asked to call the Youth and Family Services Division
at 510-238-3641

Please practice caution when going about your daily activities including coming to and from your
home. The following safety tips are being provided as reminders:
1) Always be aware of your surroundings and don’t become distracted by electronic devices
including cell phones.
2) Stay in well lit and populated areas when traveling alone.
3) Be especially alert when coming and going from your vehicle.
4) If someone or something looks suspicious please call the police.
